The Resurrection

From the predella of a polyptych of the Madonna and Child
The Ducal Palace, Urbino

The main imagery is typical of medieval Resurrection images in the West: In his shroud, Christ emerges from an outdoor sepulcher holding a red-cross standard in his left hand and blessing the viewer with his right. Soldiers lie around the sepulcher in various degrees of somnolence, the one on the right facing up toward Christ.

To this basic iconography are added Mount Calvary on the left with the skull and empty cross, the three women of Mark 16 approaching on the right, and Jerusalem in the background.
